Dad was a Cowboy?
Dad always claimed he had been a cowboy when he was young. I
understood that he had wandered around after his father fell from the bridge,
riding the rails as a hobo and becoming a cowboy. Whether this is all exactly
true I can’t say.

Here is an old ambrotype, the kind of instant photograph
made at carnivals or by traveling photographers. It was found in my parent’s
things that I inherited. It shows dad wearing a ten-gallon hat, frowning as
best he can, and maybe about ready to draw his pistol.
