In the Farm Yard
Author
When Bud Bailey built his new home the old house fell into disuse
and was eventually demolished years latter. I remember seeing it as a child, on
the way to fish in Uncle John’s pond. Some of the materials were salvaged and
used in farm structures. At right is a photo of a grooved ceiling beam. The
decorative beams served to support the floors of the upper levels of the old
house. Today it supports a shed attached to a tobacco barn on Bud’s farm.

Allen German Bailey may have built this old corncrib. The construction
shows how the earliest settlers built log cabins. A lot of extra work was
needed to chop flat faces onto the logs, I don’t know why this would be done
for a corncrib. The axe cuts can still be seen on these logs. The corncrib
stood at the old home site originally and was dismantled and reassembled piece
by piece in Bud’s farmyard.
