SUMMER FOLIAGE Page 7

The Voodoo plants are rampart this year.

Purple Cone Flowers

This elephant's ear plant grows from a large bulb. It reaches it's maximum size in summer as seen here. These leaves are almost as large as the chairs in front of them. I left the bulb in the ground too long and it rotted from the cold. Some day I may buy another.

This may be the same as a previous unknown plant, if so it has self seeded on the opposite side of our walkway.

This Yucca plant has been here a long time and has not spread. It has an extra large stalk.

The unknown plant consists of tall fluffy green fronds and yellow blooms nestled between the fronds. The blooms consist of heart shaped petals. The plant here is growing under an azalea bush, visible in the left of the picture. The plants grow and spread like weeds and there are dozens growing in the area. The picture is in mid July.

An enlargement of the flowering part of the plant suggests that it is more complicated than a fast first glance. The heart shaped petals are clear, but the green tubes with the red ends are probably the real reproduction areas.
