02 CELLO SIZE INSTRUMENTS

Here are larger members of the viol and violin families. The instruments rest on the floor and are held between the legs. Three forms.

The Viola Da Gamba as a member of the Viol family. The Viol family is making a comeback due to historic interest. The members of this family have a fretted fingerboard which precludes the vibrato effect, the staple of the violin family. And there are seven strings, count the tuning pegs.

The Violincello or Cello is the second largest bowed instrument in the modern symphony orchestra. Notice the left hand creating the vibrato effect.

BARYTON The Baryton has two sets of strings; one set bowed from the top of the instrument, and the other set plucked from the back.
