13 LARGE INSTRUMENTS
These are extra large instruments which play and look similar to more common instruments. Also see the Large Horn page.
The Surbahar, or bass sitar, is a traditional Indian instrument. The large size allows for sympathetic strings, strings that are not plucked but vibrate in unison with strings that are plucked.
The Bazantar is a newly invented instrument. It is constructed with the same principle of sympathetic strings as the Surbahar. It is a large Cello with extra strings.
TUBULAR BELLS or Chimes. These are large, tuned and the musician can play a melody on them.
The hydraulophone uses water blown through pipes to make the sounds. An organ uses air blown through pipes. This is presently the world's largest hydraulophone. It is the main architectural centerpiece out in front of the Ontario Science Centre
