Obituaries 3
March 17, 1941 was when this obituary ran in the Lynchburg
News. Here is the death notice of my great grandmother, Martha Virginia J Moses
Bailey DePriest. I have not found what the J stands for. I was one of the 12
great grandchildren. Mrs. Kate Steppe
is my grandmother, the daughter of Martha.
I remember staying with grandma DePriest when my mother gave birth to my
first sister Sylvia. It was then that I took my first steps, so I say that
Grandma DePriest taught me how to walk. Clay Davis remembers this great
grandmother as the “woman in black”.
My father was a pallbearer when his aunt Maggie Steppe
Jordan died in 1973. And there are pallbearers, who are not kin to me; they are
children of the brothers or sisters of Maggie’s husband, R. F. Jordan (uncle
Frank)
Aunt Betty died in 1971. The list of pallbearers has only
one name that I recognize, Melvin Bagby. He was a second cousin of aunt Betty
and my mother.
